Connecting the Urban Form - Design

This design studio explored a re-use and re-invigoration of a twenty-three story building in the downtown area of Chicago. This intervention aimed to incorporate a public walkway through the ground floor of the building, in a new way to relate to the facades of a downtown city experience and a new urban form. The intervention also re-used the current facade of brick into new fluid curvilinear forms that orchestrate movement in the ground plane and also direct a porous but private shading system for the upper floors. The forms also were positioned to juxtapose the current building grid and also the grid for the city. This shading strategy was based on the differing programmatic spaces and also the need for different privacy and transparency throughout the entire building.
